Today marks the debut of a new feature on Tweenish, exploring boutiques and shops for the tween who wants to make a major fashion statement. Do you have a favorite locally-owned store you think is cool? E-mail me at jzolondz@evtrib.com!
Garage, a kids’ boutique in the Mix Shops in Scottsdale (7107 E Stetson Dr.), oozes fun in every corner. Where else can you find a candy bar, designer duds and a walk-up ice cream window? Owner Katie Wilson reigns over a fabulous space where kids can have fun, parents can splurge and everyone can indulge in a hostess cupcake ($1… preferably outside on the patio.)
“I didn’t have the right space to fulfill my vision,” Wilson said of her former location at Scottsdale’s Borgata shopping plaza. “It wasn’t drawing the right demo.” She says the new location, tucked into the second level next to the Estate House, gets “better and better. It’s a hidden gem.”
There’s an awesome event at the store tomorrow! From 10am to 3pm, Friday March 7, grab your mom (or dad!) and for a trunk show with face painting, snacks and a dj!
Kids won’t have to shell out an entire month’s of allowance for the sit-down Candy Bar, stocked with new and old favorites, starting at 25 cents.
After-school, chow down on hostess cupcakes for $1, or a cupcake/skim milk combo for $3. “I want kids to hang out at the tables outside and do their homework.” Bikers can ride up to the pick up window and enjoy Blue Bunny ice cream.
The hot brands for boys include Billtornade (pants, $138) and Marc Jacobs for kids, a collection cut specifically for them.
A Paul Frank bike tops a display of Diesel Jeans. ($98) You can buy the bike, too!
A bucket of space dudes.
DON’T WORRY! That gun isn’t dangerous, only the coolest weapon in a pillow fight EVER. The puffy jambox shouldn’t be used to challenge any breakdancers, though. (Gamma-go, $30)
Iceberg (dress, $250) and Junk Food Kids are cool brands for girls. Coming soon is Dolce & Gabana’s kids line. The store likes to stock small, independent designers too.
I drooled over the cool Alter Ego jewelry ($98 for the Sleeping Beauty, Bugs Bunny and car bracelets, $200 for the My little Pony and Cinderella necklaces) which features cartoon characters and cool beads. (Changepurses, $10)
These Loungefly tees ($28 each) rock!
Garage has a TON of Paul Frank kidswear for boys and girls ($22 and up)
