‘Holes’ review:
You’ll Dig This! It’s a ‘Hole’ lotta fun! My family and I went to see ‘Holes” this past weekend and we loved it.
Kids who have read the award-winning novel by Louis Sachar will love seeing Camp Green Lake materialize before their very eyes.
If you are fan of the Disney movie, you are probably wondering how the cast digs those holes on stage? Well thanks to the ingenuity of Director and Scenic Designer Paul Sannerud, the stage at MAC was extended over the orchestra pit to create the depth needed for the actors to dig the holes in ‘Holes’. And the backdrop has a sky full of holes where the vignettes take place.
Poor Stanley Yelnats has been stricken by his families bad luck curse all because of his “no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather!”
Gus Hines, of Mesa, AZ makes his debut as the wonderfully likeable Stanley Yelnats IV. Hines’ scenes with Nick Hill, who is magical as Zero, are so genuine they make you want to root for the underdogs!
And Cody Davis, as X-Ray, is very effective in his role as the leader of the camp bullies.
As for the heroine of the show, Mary Donnelly really rallies the audience behind her when she owns the role of the Wild-West outlaw Kissin’ Kate Barlow. An honorable mention goes to Andrew Nunemacher who is hilarious as Elya.
Mesa Arts Center has partnered with Lowell Elementary School to bring a a much loved book to life this year. Older children will get to see the play and read “Holes” by Louis Sachar.
If you need any more convincing let the seal of approval from the Mesa Public Schools be your guide.
Unfortunately it is a short run and ends March 9th so enjoy the show! We certainly did.
